Who We Are

OUR MISSION: The Ventura County Potters’ Guild is a nonprofit organization committed to stimulating public interest in ceramic arts by providing networking, education and sales opportunities in an inclusive environment for all levels and interests.

We are one of only three Potters’ Guilds in California: San Diego, Ventura and Berkeley. Our members include professional and recreational potters as well as ceramists who are instructors from local elementary, high school, college and adult education classes. We also welcome those who are simply interested in ceramics in and around the Ventura County area. Our members travel from Los Alamos, Santa Ynez, Santa Barbara, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Burbank, Reseda, Valencia and beyond!

2022 Bowl of Thanks

On 11/4-11/5 VCPG worked with the City of Ventura to host a Bowl of Thanks at our first Ventura Pottery Market.

Our members were very generous and contributed over 350 handmade bowls to the event. Customers purchase the bowls and receive a ticket to go to local restaurants and get a sample of the food in their bowl.

All the monies raised by our Bowl of Thanks were donated to the Downtown Ventura Family Reconnections. Kevin Clerici who runs the charity wrote to us:

“The Bowl of Thanks event was incredible. I am so grateful to each of you for your help. And the timing couldn’t have been better. With the rain and cold weather the last two days, we did 2 successful reconnections since Monday. We sent a woman to her family in San Bernardino, and this morning we helped a guy get back to Newport Beach. He was cold and hungry and wet. And we got him fed and back with his sister by sundown.”

Little Hands in Clay

Once a year, VCPG sponsors and provides materials for 8 weeks of ceramics classes through the Arts Educational Program of the Ventura County Arts Council.  This year the class was for 2nd graders and below are some of their pinch pot projects.

History

VCPG was founded in 1957 by students at the Ventura Community College and interested potters.

Our founding members were Louis Anderson, Paula Follette, Helen Fowler, Doris Kahn, Walter Knecht, Frank Noyes, Isadora Parsons, Jessica Prescott, Connie Tviet, William Winterbourne.

In 1959 they had a pottery exhibit and served tea wearing white gloves at the Ojai Music Festival for the first time. VCPG has exhibited at the Music Festival ever since.

We continue to have Members’ meetings every month. Each meeting includes a presentation by an artist. The general public is welcome to attend. We also sponsor workshops to broaden the artist’s skills. Opportunities for juried members to sell their work include the Ventura Pottery Gallery at the Ventura Harbor Village,  Ventura Pottery Online, and the Ojai Pottery Sale in conjunction with the Ojai Music Festival.

Since its creation over 60 years ago, VCPG has become a non-profit organization, promoting interest in all facets of pottery making and appreciation of the ceramic arts. The Guild has grown from the original 10 to more than 150 members and has expanded beyond Ventura to represent much of southern and central California.

Troy Schmidt has organized and put online all of the Guild’s historical photos and press clippings. It’s a fascinating resource, and can be found here:
